FoodStruck: Astoria’s newest innovative food concept

It’s 1AM on a Friday and you’re starving. Kitchens and deliveries stop at midnight, and you’re craving delicious comfort food. What do you do?

Lucky for you, a late-night spot for all comfort food lovers has officially opened its doors: FoodStruck, located at 31-06 35th St. is here to satisfy all of your midnight cravings. Opened by friends and co-workers Ravi Thapa and Eric Dela Cruz a few months back, FoodStruck is a no-frills establishment here to help you indulge in delicious, affordable grub.

Thapa and Dela Cruz, both longtime Astoria residents, have worked their way at some of the top kitchens (Michelin-star) restaurants and met while both were working at Astoria staple Mar’s. Thapa, a bartender, jokingly refers to himself as the “front of the house” while Mr. Dela Cruz whips up delicious dishes in the kitchen.

FoodStruck is strictly takeout, for now. The team plans to open up some additional seating at the front of the location soon, as well as eventually teaming up with UberEats for some late night deliveries (after midnight). The aim of FoodStruck is to take the classics, say your simple grilled cheese, and make it even tastier.

Which brings me to their 3 Cheese Grilled Cheese ($6), complete with Swiss, cheddar, mozzarella, caramelized onions, on rosemary garlic buttered multi-grain bread. The pairing of the crunch & flavor of the rosemary garlic butter with the sweetness of the caramelized onions and the gooey, delicious melted cheese makes this dish a personal standout.

Other customer favorites include the Chopped Cheese ($8), which Thapa informs me FoodStruck is one of very few locations in Queens to have the dish. Another standout is the Big Will ($8), made with fried chicken thighs topped with a soy tamarind glaze, and accompanied by spicy mayo, bibb lettuce, scallions, fried garlic, on a garlic rosemary-buttered potato bun.

There are also vegetarian-friendly dishes and rotating specials, such as the Pretty Funghi, which consists of shiitake mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, garlic, burrata, brown butter, and fried sage on a Hawaiian roll.

Bottom line: FoodStruck is delicious, cozy, and absolutely worth a try. Grab a dish & a friend, and enjoy in the comfort of your own home, or at a bring your own food establishment (here’s looking at you, Diamond Dogs).
