Safety Changes To Come

The DOT will begin working on extensive safety measures for intersections along Northern Boulevard, making it easier for pedestrians.

Community Board 1 approved a plan by the agency to construct 14 pedestrian safety islands, along with banning some left hand turns and other changes from Honeywell Street to Broadway. The roadway which the changes will take place on goes from Astoria to Woodside.

The changes come after serious realization to the dangers behind the highway. From 2010 to 2014, 22 people were killed or injured, making it the 14th most dangerous roadway in downstate New York, in the Watchdog organizations 2014 list

The safety islands will be spread all along the intersections from Northern Boulevard and 39th Avenue, 37th Street, 50th Street, Broadway and more.

Left turns will also be a thing of the past on 39th and 36th Avenues and 37th street, making it easier to assess traffic conditions for those wanting to cross.

There will also be reversal of some streets, namely the northbound 48th Street and southbound 49th Street. This is in addition to the one block of 49th Street between Broadway and Newton Road that will be turned into a two-way street There will also be a ban on westbound right turns on Steinway Street.

These changes and more will all begin in July with the full project completion projected to take two years,
