Open Fertility: Bringing Astorians One Step Closer to Parenthood
Approximately 1-in-6 couples trying to have a child will experience difficulties conceiving or carrying a pregnancy beyond the first few weeks. However, no two people’s fertility journeys look the same, and each individual or couple has different goals, timelines, and definitions of family-building success. This is why Open Fertility aims to empower those looking to grow their family by educating individuals on their fertility and the best course of action for their journey to parenthood.

Open Fertility is part of the Spring Fertility family. Spring Fertility was founded in 2016 in San Francisco by Doctors Peter Klatsky and Nam Tran, who are award-winning physicians with certifications in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Spring Fertility exists to set the standard for fertility care, delivering exceptional clinical outcomes paired with the most human, personalized patient experience in medicine. Open Fertility was founded in 2025, and is an outcomes-driven fertility clinic designed to expand access to high-quality care while maintaining a standard of excellent outcomes at a more accessible price point.
Open Fertility is centered on evidence-based treatment plans and a care structure built to maximize each patient’s chance of success. Patients are supported by a team that guides them through every stage of the process, combining clinical expertise with a highly personalized, relationship-driven, compassionate approach. “Many people who need fertility treatment are unable to access care because of financial barriers. One of the biggest opportunities is improving accessibility to high-quality fertility care,” shared Meghan Dwyer, SVP of Marketing at Spring Fertility.

This approach reflects a broader commitment to transparency and accountability. Patients are given clear expectations and a team directly invested in their outcomes. The result is a more accessible path to fertility treatment that upholds a high bar for clinical success and patient experience, ensuring more individuals and families can pursue treatment with both confidence and clarity.
Open Fertility offers a range of fertility treatments, including in-vitro fertilization (IVF), egg freezing, and LGBTQ+ family planning. While these treatments are typically costly, Open Fertility focuses on providing personalized care for each patient with their fertility provider at the facility, while aiming to also reduce the number of unnecessary visits. This alone reduces the cost of care for each patient exponentially. Initially, each patient is seen by a provider for their initial consultation and treatment plan, which is developed in collaboration with the facility’s medical director.

“I’ve been in women’s health since I began my nursing career. It was such a wonderful experience from my rotations that I was passionate about it. The fertility field felt like where I was supposed to be practicing to support women in making decisions about reproductive health” stated Valerie Shafran, Nurse Practitioner, FNP-C at Open Fertility.
The clinic’s founders noticed that there was a lack of access to high quality fertility care in the Queens area. Those looking for treatments would have to travel into Manhattan or even Long Island for care, as Queens and specifically Astoria did not have many options. Open Fertility works in close coordination with Spring Fertility, ensuring patients have seamless access to the broader clinical system when needed. Spring Fertility’s main New York City location is nearby Bryant Park, and is ultimately where the patient’s egg retrieval procedure takes place.
In just one year since opening its doors, the staff of Open Fertility already sees how they’ve touched the lives of patients they’ve been fortunate enough to work with.
“The impact is pretty incredible. One amazing thing about having a clinic in a community like Astoria is that Valerie will be walking the streets wearing [Open Fertility] gear, and someone will come up to her and say this is an Open Fertility baby. The impact you have on people’s lives is so incredible and we couldn’t be more excited to be here”, said Dwyer.
The most rewarding part of the process for the Open Fertility team? “The connections you build with patients in going through this type of process. You are as invested in your patient’s journeys as you are with friends and family’s journeys much of the time”, shared Shafran.
For those interested in educating themselves on fertility and reproductive health, Open Fertility hosts in-clinic, free events monthly. Open Fertility is located at 36-13 30th Avenue. Additional information can be found on their website: openfertility.com
