The year gets off to a great start with opera, foreign film, live music, mulch, geology, fermentation, and recipes. Obviously, 2023 is going to be a fantastic year in Queens!
Jan. 6, Benediction, 6:30 pm. British director Terrence Davies’s unorthodox drama tells the story of pacifist poet Siegfried Sassoon, who was forever changed by his World War I experiences. Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave., Astoria’s Kaufman Arts District.

Jan. 7, Fermenting Vegetables Workshop, 10 am. Contraband Ferments CEO and Chief Fermentationist Cheryl Paswater is also an educator, artist, and writer. She leads this Zoom workshop about fermenting vegetables. Participants also get copies of the recipes and a foundation in safe-preserving practices.
Jan. 7, N-Y-C Geo-Lo-Gy, noon. This nature walk through Alley Pond Park makes stops at geological highlights that relay the past billion years of pre-human settlement. Jan. 7, Open Studios for Teens + Adults with Disabilities, Jan. 8. On the first weekend of the month, teens and adults with disabilities enjoy art-making and gallery exploration with trained museum educators and teaching artists. This opera tells the chilling story of a doctor whose obsession with a beautiful young patient was so great that he kept her cadaver as his lover after her untimely death.
