Charlie’s – Sgt. Pepper Martini
Charlie’s, A.K.A Astoria’s littlest pub, A.K.A The Bonnie’s sidekick, is one of the best places to spend a Friday or Saturday night in Astoria. This remains true all year long, but is especially the case during the summer. With vinyl being spun all night, the pub is always home to a jovial atmosphere. To match those great vibes, Charlie’s offers some incredibly unique cocktail creations. One drink in particular has become so popular that it’s starting to be considered their signature cocktail. Known as the Sgt. Pepper Martini, it is garlic and pepper-infused vodka mixed with pickle juice and topped with a feta-stuffed peppadew pepper garnish. Though it seems unconventional, each component blends together perfectly to bring out the briny, salty, and vibrant flavors. It’s the perfect choice for dirty martini lovers looking for something a bit more adventurous.

Though this list probably could have consisted of only frozen cocktails, we decided to include just our favorite alcoholic summertime slushie. It can be found on Diamond Dogs, one of Astoria’s premier locations for summertime sipping. This summer, Diamond Dogs loyalists will be happy to know that a frozen favorite is returning for the fifth year in a row. It’s called the Trinidad Sour Slushie, and it’s surely been recommended by anyone who has ever tasted it. Made with rye whiskey, Angostura amaro and bitters, lemon juice, and almond orgeat, this drink is as delicious as it is refreshing. Few things this summer will have you feeling more relaxed this summer than enjoying a couple of these in Diamond Dogs’ backyard, tucked away on one of the quaintest sections of Astoria’s most underrated street, 31st Ave.

Bar Dalia – Bar Dalia Punch
It may not be your go-to drink 12 months a year, but something about a rum punch in the summer just feels right. The fruity and refreshing flavors, along with the almost alarming drinkability of these cocktails, will make you feel like you’re on vacation without leaving the neighborhood. And when it comes to rum punch in Astoria, no one does it better than Bar Dalia and their titular Bar Dalia punch. A Caribbean getaway in a glass, it’s made with Brinley coconut rum, Sailor Jerry spiced rum, Velvet Falernum, mango juice, and pineapple juice, with a Goslings dark rum float. Sipping one alongside any of the great tapas Bar Dalia has to offer will make for a truly extraordinary summer afternoon.

The Last Word – El Nido
Ditmars’ classiest cocktail bar, The Last Word, is home to some of the best drinks in the neighborhood. Their menu tends to evolve with the seasons, but they always have their staples, such as the spicy and sweet El Nido. Made with jalapeno-infused tequila, lemon, and honey, it’s a unique remix of the classic spicy margarita. And since you’ll probably be having plenty of those at local watering holes all summer, carve out some time to try this cocktail, which perfectly balances the heat with the sweetness, creating something truly luscious. Ovelia’s Grexican perfectly captures the restaurant’s ability to blend Greek influences with contemporary culinary and cocktail culture. Made with El Silencio Mezcal, almond soumada, fresh lime juice, orange peel, and rosemary, it balances smoky, citrusy, and herbal flavors with remarkable precision. Rosalie’s – Through the Vine
Rosalie’s was already a premier warm-weather drinking destination thanks to their incredibly generous happy hour pricing and spacious back patio, but their new summer cocktail menu just took things up a notch and made them an absolute must-visit for all Astorians. The standout of their new, seasonal offerings is called Through the Vine. It’s made by combining Ford’s Gin, Aperol, Pisco, rhubarb amaro, lemon, grape cordial, and here’s the kicker, it is then topped with a frozen grape garnish. Not only will the frozen fruit keep your drink cool without watering it down, they will also make for a refreshing and delicious little snack as you drink your new favorite cocktail. Much like the Rosalie’s itself, Through the Vine is the perfect blend of elegance and fun.

But, as a true comfort spot for appreciators of good wine and liquor, their menu also boasts a wide variety of expertly crafted cocktails. We landed on the Sunset Spritz, which is made with sparkling wine, soda, and Montanaro 6pm Aperitivo. It is light, bubbly, and everything you want from a cocktail with this name. Throughout these next few months, it’ll make the perfect companion for happy hour drinking and boozy summer evenings.

One of Astoria’s best Irish pubs, Honey Fitz, is adding a collection of new summer drinks to their already impressive cocktail menu. The most exciting addition is a drink called Benito’s Lemonade. It’s a mixture of Jim Beam bourbon, homemade burnt banana lemonade, and Angostura. While the boozy lemonade is a classic summer staple, Honey Fitz’s spin has transformed it into something even greater. The banana notes add depth and complexity while the lemonade keeps everything bright, refreshing, and perfect for beating the heat. In the same way that Honey Fitz manages to stay unique while always keeping a traditional Irish pub spirit, this drink is inventive without being overly complicated, which is what makes it work.

Whiskey lovers know that the famed brown spirit does not need to be reserved for just the cold-weather months. And at Maggie Hall’s, one of 30th Ave’s most charming and approachable drinking destinations, they have the whiskey-forward cocktail that’s perfectly enjoyable on any hot day. The Frisky Whiskey combines Roe & Co Irish Whiskey with St. James Spiced Pear liqueur, spiced syrup, and lemon for a drink that’s simultaneously warming and refreshing. The fruit and citrus keep it light enough for summer, while the whiskey flavor still gives it some strong character. And with Maggie Hall’s convenient location making bar-hopping a breeze, the best thing about this drink is that it works as either an introduction to happy hour or a closing nightcap.

One of the largest restaurants on 30th Ave by square footage, The Grand’s massive indoor space and adjoining outdoor seating make it a perfect destination for summer get-togethers. From Sunday brunches to weekday happy hours, it’s a spot meant for meeting up with friends and sipping a few cocktails while enjoying a delicious meal. For the upcoming heat, their most refreshing drink option is the Pineapple Express, a cocktail that is as colorful as it is flavorful. It’s made with tequila blanco, lime juice, Mexican chili syrup, vanilla, pineapple puree, and fire bitters. Though you’ll want to drink it right away, you might stop for a moment to take out your phone and post it on Instagram because of how beautiful it looks in its glass with a pineapple slice garnish. Once you’re done playing photographer, though, you won’t be able to put the drink down, and you’ll probably find yourself ordering a couple more before the meal is over.
