Culture Lab: Drumming Up Scenes for Art in Queens
We all know that Astoria and LIC are now the new mecca for artists. Well, maybe not so new, but the neighborhood is recognizably getting its resurgence in the arts with more film studios being built alongside the ever-so-famous Kaufman Studios, and more available venues being offered for performing and visual arts. It’s no secret that artists of all genres have been flocking here for some time now. One establishment in particular, Culture Lab in LIC, a non-profit 501 C (3), has jumped on the bandwagon to bring you a culture of artists in a unified space that represents the diversity of art in our community, from fine arts to performing arts. It’s become a multi-genre experience of art that showcases and promotes the great talent among us.
Located at the Plaxall Gallery, a 12,000-square-foot space in a converted warehouse, Culture Lab has become a tour de force on the arts scene here, ever since it first opened its doors in October 2016. With a growing number of programs and community outreach every year, the donated space from the Plaxall Gallery has been a tremendous boost to the LIC arts community and surrounding area. The primary goal of Culture Lab’s mission is to offer support to other non-profit groups and individuals that want to make a positive impact through the arts, education, the environment, or entertainment. A variety of art programs and workshops for children and teens are part of their educational programming, and also provide employment opportunities for local artists. Their residency program is designed to provide free studio, rehearsal, and performance space for artists to create and develop their work.
So, if you are a creative of any type, be it comedian, musician, visual artist, theater or dance performer, or simply a purveyor of art, you might want to head over to Culture Lab for your next culture fix. Thursdays, Fridays, and weekends offer free, live outdoor comedy and music nights. If you get hungry or thirsty in between sets, you can always grab a bite or a beverage at their beer and food stand by the waterfront. We recommend that you check their calendar before heading out as some events may be seasonal.
