Boswyck Farms was started in 2008 by Lee Mandell, because of the fact that Bushwick and many other neighborhoods in New York City are considered “food deserts”: areas that lack adequate access to fresh, healthy produce. Lee wanted to help combat this problem through urban farming, and so Boswyck Farms began.
Boswyck Farms does three things: Design and build, teach, and play!
People of all ages and abilities can get involved with hydroponics, and Boswyck farms has the experience to help anyone design and build a hypdropronic farm – whether they’re new to the world of hydroponics, or experienced in it. In addition to building hydroponic farms to support food programs, many of their non-profit clients have developed year-round therapeutic and educational programming around their farms.
Hydroponics isn’t just about growing food, it about an ever-growing understanding of science, math, and technology. Boswyck Farms offers a range of educational opportunities for any age and skill level, ranging from one-day farm visits at their sites, semester-long programming in your own classroom, to hydroponic certification. They also offer a hydroponic certification course that will teach you everything you need to practice hydroponics and basic horticulture indoors and out. During the Boswyck Farms Certification Course, you’ll build hydroponic systems together (everything from small windowsill planters to large scale community projects), and learn how to grow any type of food crop imaginable without soil. There’s also lots of work shops!
A harvest from the roof top farmOne of the most fun ways to learn about farming and hydroponics is by becoming a volunteer and joining the fun! They use volunteers for design and build assistance, crop management, and event support. You can volunteer here.
