The Best Coffee Shop in Astoria
We’ve narrowed it down to four shops – and we’ll let you know how they describe themselves – while keeping our lips sealed!
Astoria Coffee, 30-04 30th St
Opened by Dennis Lee and Liz Wick, Astoria Coffee shop is a cozy spot that never lets us down. It’s brightly lit, with sunshine streaming in all day. It’s quiet and has a great variety of coffee and locally based treats. One of our favorite things is the ever-dueling tip jars – with choices like Star Trek vs. Star Wars. Here’s what Astoria Coffee says about themselves, “We live in Astoria and our goal is to provide a comfortable space to hang out with neighbors over great coffee, tea, and food. We want to be a part of art, culture, and community happenings in the neighborhood.
Our goal from the beginning was to open a coffee shop, but this venture started as a whole bean delivery service inspired by our neighbors who were eager for a steady supply of great coffee in Astoria before we opened a brick and mortar shop. We’re incredibly grateful for the early enthusiasm and owe it all to the wonderful community of residents and business owners in Astoria.”
60 Bean, 36-02 Ditmars Boulevard
Another newcomer in the Astoria coffee scene, 60 Bean is definitely a spot we enjoy. It’s a great place to hang out with a laptop (free wifi!?) and cup of coffee to get some work done. We really love the decor at 60 Bean – it’s a mix of rough, edgy architecture, and warm colors. It’s industrial while still being welcoming.
Queens Kickshaw, 40-17 Broadway
Queens Kickshaw serves up some amazing food, but they’re also great as one of our go-to coffee shops. They’ve got a great coffee selection – especially their pour overs, which use really unique offerings such as Concepción Huista from Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Here’s how they describe themselves:
The Queens Kickshaw serves specialty coffee, fancy grilled cheese sandwiches, scratch cooking, craft ales, and cider.
TQK is a labor of love for husband and wife team Ben Sandler and Jennifer Lim. They have been living in Astoria for over 6 years, and wanted to create a place and community that reflected their love for the neighborhood, and their passions for good food and drink.
Chef Kenji Hurlburt hails from notable NYC eateries as The National (Geoffrey Zakarian), Michelin-starred Rouge Tomate, and Gotham Bar & Grill. His cooking style can be described as practical, with the belief that great dishes start with great ingredients.
OK Cafe, 22-04 33rd St
OK Cafe is as quaint as you can possibly get. It’s cozy, and has really awesome coffee – as well as state of the art machines. It’s really welcoming, and probably one of the friendliest coffee shops in the neighborhood. There’s something about OK that makes us feel like we’re part of their family – maybe it’s the size, maybe it’s the baristas – but it’s something we really like. Here’s what they have to say about themselves:
“Predrag and Giselle Grncarski have always dreamed of opening a cafe together. While Giselle is from Minneapolis and Predrag from Belgrade (giving them different ideas about coffee and cafes) they agreed that their home neighborhood of Astoria would be the perfect place to do so. Now with two school-age daughters they have greater connections to the neighborhood than ever and were thrilled to find the right location to bring their dream to fruition. They hope that OK Café will be a wonderful meeting place for neighbors and friends, both old and new.
And yes, it was their daughters who insisted that the cafe serve popsicles and ice cream!”
