Making Dad a Glad Lad with a Plan That’s very Rad

Father’s Day done Our Way

Last month, we celebrated moms on Mother’s Day. This time around, it’s only fair that we show all the dads out there that same level of love on Father’s Day. There’s something for everyone in Astoria, including your old man! So, without further ado, here’s a compilation of a few outstanding neighborhood establishments to visit with your pops this holiday.

Sweet Spot

You can’t leave sports out of dad’s special day, and this place is a fanatic’s dream. 7,000 square feet of booth, bar and table seating filled with 43 (!) television screens will surely elevate the game day experience like few in the area can. You know what else is elevated? Their menus. Brunch and dinner options include basically anything you can think of and then some, with plates like Lobster Mac & Cheese, Skirt Steak Tacos and Dirty Dogs (hot dogs covered in bacon, cheese, crispy onion, jalapeños). Major League Baseball currently has fifteen games slated for Father’s Day, including 1:05pm starts for both the hometown Yankees and Mets. Depending on scheduling, the NHL and NBA playoffs could also still have a few games left.

Triborough Bridge

Maybe watching sports just isn’t enough for you and the old man. Maybe it’s time that you finally show dad who’s boss on the courts. You’ll find just what you need under the R.F.K. Bridge: tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer fields and more. The Triborough Playgrounds and Chappetto Square are located conveniently close to Astoria Park and remain open from 6am-9pm every day. After the competition is over, cool off by going on a stroll along the water and take in some signature park views.

LIC Tonsorial: Barber Shop & Shaving Parlor

Hey – guys need a little pampering here and there, too, and that’s just what the LIC Tonsorial does. Treat your dad to a little bit of class this Father’s Day by booking him an appointment at this stylish parlor where the barbers are dapper and their clients come out looking just as neat. All cuts come with a hot towel neck shave, wash and style to finish you off.

Plus, kids and seniors get some steep discounts! So please, if dad’s looking a bit scruffy come June 20th, put him in the superior hands of this soon-to-be neighborhood staple. Sunday hours are 11am-7pm.

If the fancy settings or sweaty scrimmages just ain’t your dad’s thing, we’ve got just the place. A trip to Gilbey’s will get you a chill, quiet night at a good old-fashioned Irish pub right on Broadway. Known for their friendly staff and quality cocktails, there’s a good chance you’ve found your perfect establishment for a lowkey Father’s Day. While Gilbey’s doesn’t serve food, they’re perfectly fine with you bringing your own or ordering in. So, head over and make the most of it with the old man and his favorite bottle.

Chip City

Does dad have a sweet tooth? It wouldn’t matter if he didn’t. Chip City can turn any conscientious eater into the Cookie Monster with just one visit. Tucked around the corner of 34th Street and 30th Avenue, this tiny establishment makes some giant cookies – and serves them warm! These things are absolutely spectacular; their assortment of chocolate chip, red velvet, butterscotch and more all have a signature thick and gooey inside which rivals popular cookie chains like Insomnia and others. Throw in their selection of hot and cold coffee, tea and milk beverages and you’ve got a location great for a Father’s Day visit in the morning, day or night…or all three.
