What To Know For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

When it comes to breast cancer, the statistics are that approximately 1-in-8 women will receive the news that will change their lives forever. At our offices at Walk In GYN Care, we have been able to help numerous women through screening and early detection. Many of them had not seen any physician for years and just walked in for something else that they needed help with.

Common Signs & Symptoms of Breast Cancer

  • Lump in breast
  • Breast or nipple pain
  • Dimpling of skin around the breast
  • Swelling of breast tissue
  • Nipple discharge and/or nipple retraction
  • Changes in skin: thick, red, scaly appearance

When Should I Get A Mammogram?

Women are recommended to begin their annual mammograms at age 40. While mammograms can be uncomfortable for some, it is the most efficient form of testing to determine if a cancerous mass is present.

The CDC advises on scheduling your mammogram both the week before your period, as well as the week during your period, as breasts can be swollen and tender then. Additionally, on the day your mammogram is scheduled, avoid wearing deodorants, perfumes, or powders as these products can potentially show up as spots on the X-ray.

You may need mammograms or breast ultrasounds when you are younger than 40 years old, if you have a family history of breast cancer in two or more first-degree relatives, or if you have the high-risk BRCA genes. You can utilize the genetic cancer screening tool on the walkingyn.com/appointment website.
