Celebrating Astoria’s Veterans!

This past weekend, we had the chance to celebrate some amazing veterans living in Astoria.

The event was a birthday celebration for Sal Gagliardo’s 100th, and Luke Gasparre’s 90th. The event was hosted by Tony Meloni, of the New York Anti-Crime Agency, and George Delis.

Sal was active in both the Pacific and European theaters, having served both in Pearl Harbor and Italy. He is a highly decorated veteran, member of the OSS and recipient of the Bronze Star.

He was also extremely involved in civilian life in Astoria as a Community Board member for decades, President of Astoria Civic Association and a career in City Planning

Luke was a combat soldier and served in Europe where he saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. He is a highly decorated veteran. He has been active in Astoria’s community life, as a member of the Taminent Democratic club and various other civic groups.

At the event, both were presented with awards by the Catholic War Veterans Post # 1, the American Legion and the Immaculate Conception Knights of Columbus, as well a birthday cake made especially for Sal’s 100th birthday celebration.10802443_317958518403639_1832109363_n

 

 

Notable attendees were Former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr, Ed Babor representing Carolyn Maloney, and Community Board 1 District Manager Lucille Hartmann‏.
