Woman Struck and Killed by MTA Bus on Astoria Boulevard

At about 10 p.m Wednesday night, Melania Ward was stuck by an MTA bus – the Q47.
The accident happened on Astoria Boulevard and 80th Street, in East Elmhurst, while the bus was turning right. The investigation is still ongoing, and its unclear what caused the accident. Ward was just 55.
This isn’t the first time an accident like this has happened – in February, a woman was hit and killed by a Q53 bus on Broadway and 74th street. Another woman, in February of 2012, was struck by a Q44 bus on Northern Boulevard in Flushing.
We urge you all to stay safe – buses are huge, and often have blind spots – it can also be difficult for them to stop on short notice. Make sure you give yourself ample time and distance if you’re crossing near one – it’s better to be safe than sorry.
