End of an Era: Astoria’s Lefkos Pirgos Changes Hands After 58 Years
For nearly six decades, Lefkos Pirgos has been more than a place to grab a coffee and something sweet. For generations of Astorians, the beloved Greek pastry shop has been a familiar part of the neighborhood—a place connected to family traditions, conversations over coffee and the Greek community that helped shape Astoria.
Now, after 58 years under the ownership of the Pantazis family, an important chapter has come to a close. The family has sold Lefkos Pirgos, marking the end of an era for one of Astoria’s longstanding Greek establishments.

Lefkos Pirgos, meaning “White Tower,” takes its name from the famous landmark in Thessaloniki, Greece. Over the decades, the pastry shop became part of the everyday rhythm of Astoria’s Greek community, known for its traditional pastries, desserts, cakes and coffee. It became the kind of neighborhood business where generations of the same family were customers—parents bringing their children, who years later returned with families of their own.
As Astoria changed around it, Lefkos Pirgos remained a connection to an earlier era of the neighborhood, when Greek bakeries, restaurants, cafés and businesses helped define much of the community. Through changing generations and a dramatically evolving neighborhood, the Pantazis family kept that tradition alive.

While the family’s ownership has now come to an end, Lefkos Pirgos itself isn’t disappearing. The business has been sold to new Greek-American ownership, and Giouly Pantazi is encouraging longtime customers to continue supporting the establishment.
“I tell people to keep coming to Lefkos Pirgos because it is a clean establishment and the people who are taking it over are very good,” Pantazi told The National Herald. “Everyone should continue to come, just as they did before.”
For Astoria, the sale represents more than a change in ownership. Businesses that remain for decades become part of a neighborhood’s collective memory—through birthdays, Sunday coffees, boxes of pastries brought to family gatherings and countless conversations shared over the years.
And after nearly six decades, Pantazi leaves Lefkos Pirgos with a simple reflection on the way she ran the business and the legacy she leaves behind.
“I worked honestly. I owe no one anything. I leave with my head held high.”
As a new chapter begins for Lefkos Pirgos, Astoria says goodbye to the Pantazis family’s 58-year run and thank you for the pastries, coffee and memories that became part of the neighborhood’s story.
