7 Reasons Everyone Wants This Mango Dessert in Astoria

The mango sits in the display case, looking perfectly ripe and delicious. You feel like you could pick it up, give it that little squeeze that tells you it’s ripe, and go about the complicated but rewarding process of peeling and eating a mango. But it’s not a mango. It’s a confectionary treat that’s exploded in popularity and brought in customers from all over. You almost feel bad gently cracking the exterior with a spoon to reveal the artistry inside: mango mousse with mango puree and tres leches filling. It looks and tastes incredible.

But Jhoanes’ isn’t just a bakery. They feature a full menu with just about anything you can think of; Jhoanes’ is practically a diner. Order up chicken, salmon, or a 14oz ribeye cooked to your liking. Breakfast is served all day, so grab an avocado toast to go with that juicy burger if you feel like it.

When it’s busy, which is often, Jhoanes’ sets up a host’s stand and waitlist for the dozen or so tables that offer service. While you wait, you can check out a dazzling display of artisanal croissants and pastries in the glass case at the front. The décor is inspired, with cherry blossoms and lights hanging from the ceiling and greenery snuck in wherever it can be. And don’t be scared to talk to one of the friendly staff regarding your options. They seem to understand and be enjoying their viral fame, and the staff relishes giving advice and answering questions about every detail that goes into those brilliant little fruit creations.

The banana looks just a tad undersized, and strawberry looks almost comically large, but the mango, the apple and the pear could sit in your fruit basket for a week, and you wouldn’t look twice. It’s astounding. Get over there when you can. They should probably be charging more for the edible art at Jhoanes’, and it probably won’t be long until they do.
