Daly’s Pub in Astoria Serves the Most Legendary Guinness Pour
If you’ve never had the chance to try a Guinness, it’s something you need to experience. To someone from Ireland, it’s not just a beer. It’s Guinness, and it’s practically a way of life. And there’s nowhere better to enjoy Guinness than a spot like Daly’s Pub.

Ask an Irishman about Guinness and you can expect a long and loving description as to everything that makes it great. “Every pint is a work of art,” explained owner Ruari Daly. This isn’t just a beverage to be poured and downed. Guinness is something to be savored.

Daly looks for very specific things in a pint. “Not a bubble on the top. Not a bubble in the glass,” Daly said. “It shows that it’s been poured right.” The head on the beer should be fairly thick, with the foam divide located right between the rim and the harp logo on the front of the glass. If everything has been done correctly, you should be able to tilt the glass slightly and watch the foam hang over the rim and not spill. “It’s not something that everyone can do well at first,” Daly smiled. “I watch bartenders pour Guinness for days to make sure they can do it.”

Daly’s Pub offers a casual place for singles to meet up, whether you travel in a wolfpack or on your own. Daly spoke with pride about the pub’s atmosphere, “The night goes a lot faster when you get in here and see all the faces. If you’re here to meet someone, it’s what bars are all about. It’s a comfortable place. You’re greeted with a handshake.”
Daly’s Pub focuses on events and gatherings that make it easier for customers to meet up and develop a social circle. There are a variety of group events available for signup: darts tournaments, trivia, a softball league, holiday parties that include food, and even trips to Citi Field for Mets games. “We have a lot of fun,” Daly said. “And we have a real jukebox. People love the jukebox.”

Conveniently located near the Broadway subway stop, Daly’s Pub is sometimes overlooked by passers-by. While the front façade is ordinary, walking in reveals a clean and crisp wooden interior with a gorgeous wooden bar that spans nearly half the length of the room. On warmer days, a rear porch is ideal for relaxation.

Even Daly admits that Irish pubs can feel intimidating from the outside. However, Daly’s Pub welcomes everyone that walks through the door. “Daly’s Pub looks a bit dark,” Daly laughed, “But it’s not dingy. Everybody here is really friendly. Coming into an Irish bar should feel like coming into somebody’s living room.”

Maybe the best thing of all: a visit to Daly’s Pub won’t completely break the bank. You’ll find better prices at Daly’s for draughts, cocktails, and canned drinks than most other places in town. Daly understands that the price point matters to his patrons. “I think the drinks are pretty reasonable,” he said. Indeed, they are. A 20-ounce Guinness will run you just $8 during happy hour or $9 during regular hours. “And if there’s anywhere you want to try your first Guinness,” Daly said, “It’s here.”
