There is currently a fire burning underground in Astoria. Flames are being shot up in pockets through the sidewalk – creating a harmful situation.

The scene is unfolding currently at 36^th Street between 24^th and 25^th Avenue, where FDNY trucks are working to get the situation under control .

The possible reason for the flames is an underground transformer fire – it may be gas fed.

Homes around the area are being evacuated at this time, and carbon monoxide levels are being continually monitored.
