Eli Goldman Fires Up for Charity with Tikkun BBQ

If you live in the area of 31st Ave and 32nd Street in Astoria, chances are you’ve probably walked by Eli Goldman’s BBQ. Goldman was out there last April during the height of the Covid pandemic and all through the summer, slaving away over his smoker. Walking past those succulent sights of slow-roasted chicken and thick slabs of pork rib, you’d never know that out of a pick-up truck and smoker, each event donates over $2,000 for charity.

Eli, who works for City Harvest, believes in giving back. Tikkun, he explained, is a Jewish philosophy that means to help repair the world. Before he knew it, Goldman was healing and fixing his community the best way he knew how—with barbecue. While we all enjoy a good brisket sandwich, your stomach, and your mind, can feel good knowing that 50-100% of proceeds are going to charity. Eli and his growing team of volunteers have raised over $88,000 and supported the Astoria Food Pantry, Astoria Mutual Aid, and Astoria Houses.

Eli’s next event, Thanksgiving Turkey Fest 2021, is November 19th, from 2:30pm until they sell out, in collaboration with COMFORTLAND and Donut Diva. 100% of the proceeds from the event will go to the “Make-A-Wish” foundation to support Thanksgiving wishes for children who are fighting critical illnesses and living in underprivileged communities. On the menu, you’ll find bourbon maple pulled pork, loaded sweet potato casserole with pecans and marshmallows, classic mac and cheese, smoked turkey gumbo with potato salad, and the Donut Diva’s Crispy Campfire Treats (smoked almonds, choc. chunks, cranberries, graham cracker cereal). Plus, the event will have live music by DJ Rob Select! While all of the orders will only be available for take-out, there is limited outdoor seating available.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. Is there a food truck or two on the horizon? Quite possibly, but for now, Eli is enjoying giving back with his brisket and ribs. To find out more about how you can give back through his efforts to feed New York, follow him on social media, @tikkunbbq, to find his next pop-up event. It’s the massive support from Eli and his army of volunteers that make this community so resilient, strong, and most importantly, inspiring.
