Astoria N Train Service To Shut Down For Eight Weekends

For the upcoming eight weekends, there will be no N Train service between Astoria and Long Island City. The service change includes Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to an MTA announcement.

The service changes are so that the MTA can make “major upgrades” to the above-ground tracks’ infrastructure. The upgrades are set to improve reliability and reduce train noise. The N cuts will take place at seven stations, from Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard to Queensboro Plaza. The eight weekends will shut down service between the hours of 12:01AM Saturday to 5AM Monday. There will fortunately be shuttle buses which will serve commuters and head in both directions during the closure times.

What do you think of the N Train Upgrades and weekend shut downs?

The service interruptions are needed to allow for the MTA to make “major upgrades” to the above-ground tracks’ infrastructure that will improve reliability while reducing train noise, the agency said.

The upgrades will feature replacing switches, track panels and steel girders along a 730 foot span of elevated track. The cuts reflect the need for cranes and other equipment that will be moving up and down the lines. Local Councilman Costa Constantinides supports the work, saying that “critical infrastructure improvement has been long-anticipated”, in a statement, according to amny.com.

The following is a list of the shut down dates:

May 20-22, Memorial Day Weekend of May 27-30, June 3-5, August 12-14, August 19-21, August 26-28, Labor Day Weekend of Sept. 2-5 and Sept. 9-11
