Going Out Of Business In Astoria

Well we’re not sure if it’s something in the air, or perhaps everyone is clambering for a change, but whatever it is, shops and restaurants are closing left, right and center in the past few weeks in our neighborhood. So we thought it would a bitter sweet goodbye if we gave you a run down of those who we will not be seeing in the New Year.

First up, popular night spot, restaurant and all around fun time location, Cavo, has closed its doors a day after New Years. Yep, open since 1999, Cavo was home to Astorias best night life for more than a decade until last year when it closed off its restaurant portion. The word from the owners; Dino Philippou and Tommy Demaras, is that it was time to move on, seeing as the lease was just about up.

Whatever the reason, many in Astoria are gonna miss the nightspot, and we’ll miss it too.

Next on our shut down list, MexiBBQ. Located at 37-11 30th Avenue, this little gem, owned by James Paloumbis and John Bortolis, gave us a lot of nice quality Mexican cuisine. However their short time was short lived, and just like that the doors finally closed on this Astoria eatery. The website thanks everyone who loved MexiBBQ,

We want to thank you all for your patronage and making us one of the premier ‘go to ” places in Astoria. We have had an amazing time being part of your birthday celebrations, burger and beer Mondays and of course your hangover brunch. So for all of our staff we say a VERY BIG THANK YOU!!!

Do you know any other Astoria businesses closing their doors?

We will be closing for a short time while we regroup but please stay tuned as we have more tricks up our sleeve!

There is hope, as the owners, who are the same owners behind Gossip Coffee, are set to use the space for something new! Let’s just hope it isn’t a southern comfort eclectic eatery….

As we know from our previous story, Burnside Biscuits are also on this list, closing their doors at the end of last year to make way for the new Salt & Bone.

Next up, it’s Nazca Restaurant on Broadway. This Peruvian cuisine restaurant didn’t even make it to it’s first year birthday. The doors closed and new owners are set to do something different in the location.

J.M Super Value Store is another dying business. This one isn’t a restaurant, or even a fantastic shopping experience. It’s basically one of those places you can buy New York touristy stuff in, along with cheap tidbits like scarfs, hats, and more. The doors are still open, and the place is having a closing down sale, so for anyone looking to stock up on some cheap, not too bad, apparel – come now! The store is located on 33 – 06 Broadway, right next to Gleesons Pub.

So that’s it so far Astoria. However the list this year of closing businesses is ever expanding. More and more are shutting doors as we are getting close to over saturation of the standard hipster type bars and eateries. What this will do to the overall culture and feel for Astoria is still up in the air, with some fearing gentrification while others eager for new and improved concepts changing the ever evolving New York City landscape.
