Earth Day To Be Celebrated in Astoria Park

Earth Day To Be Celebrated in Astoria Park

Nature Education, Volunteer Opportunities, Free Events

Saturday, April 22nd 2017

In honor of Earth Day and Car Free Day NYC, Shore Blvd will be closed to traffic and feature educational activities, entertainment, music, kid-friendly games and nature-themed volunteer opportunities.

Astoria Park Alliance will be teaming with New York Cares volunteers in the morning for a playground cleanup and gardening upkeep duties. In the afternoon, NYC Ferry volunteers will assist APA for a shoreline cleanup to help combat littering concerns in the East River.

Council Member Costa Constantinides will lead a ribbon-cutting ceremony to highlight the grand re-opening of the Bocce Ball Court that the Alliance has been renovating with Daniel Berrios since the Fall.

Attendees will be able to learn about composting, gardening, recycling, water conservation and get their picture taken in beekeeping gear next to a live honey bee observation hive.

Kids of all ages will learn how to both “reuse” and “upcycle” with household recycled materials to create binoculars, bird feeders, seed planters, bat boxes and floral wreaths.

Child-friendly activities will include a scavenger hunt in the park, recycling relay races, face painting, henna art, origami making, bubble wands, bean bag toss, plus prizes and local gift certificate donations.

Events are scheduled to take place between 2-5 pm and will feature live music, dance performances and fitness activities including Yoga, Zumba & Tai Chi.
